Rhenania: picturing the gaze of our river
what he remembers, what he can see, what he imagines
Rhenania is an installation of three panels. Silver frames leaning against the wall contain collages of photographs. The pictures show landscapes, both organic as well as carefully crafted. The frames lean on top of three slabs of sandstone. Found objects are scattered throughout: shells, a coin, the blueprint of a church.
Rhenania is an essay, picturing the gaze of our companion – the Rhine. What he remembers, what he can see, what he imagines.
Because in the reflection broken by his currents,
is what I recognize in the arms of het Rijnland
from the embrace in dem Rheinland.
The landscape is vast, yet we live shoulder to shoulder.
And since its always been this way – space is made for change.
Still, we tell each other that the water of our river
will always keep flowing.
